What Is Filmora?
Filmora is a video editing software made by Wondershare, a Chinese software company. It's positioned between consumer-level editors (like iMovie or CapCut) and professional tools (like Premiere Pro or DaVinci Resolve). Think of it as the middle ground — powerful enough for serious content, simple enough for anyone to learn.
Since its launch, Filmora has built a massive user base among YouTube creators, small businesses, and educators. The latest version adds AI-powered features while keeping the interface approachable.
Editing Features
Filmora covers everything most creators need:
- Multi-track timeline — up to 100 video and audio tracks
- Keyframe animation — animate position, scale, rotation, and opacity
- Speed ramping — smooth speed changes with curve control
- Color correction — color wheels, curves, HSL, and LUT support
- Motion tracking — attach elements to moving objects in your footage
- Green screen — chroma key with edge refinement
- Audio editing — equalizer, noise reduction, audio ducking, beat sync
- Split screen — pre-built layouts for multi-camera or comparison videos
- Screen recording — built-in screen recorder for tutorials
The interface is drag-and-drop with a clean layout. Everything is where you'd expect it to be. Compared to DaVinci Resolve's multi-page workspace, Filmora keeps things on a single screen with tabs — less powerful, but much less intimidating.
The learning curve is low. A complete beginner can produce a decent video within their first session. An experienced editor will appreciate the shortcuts and advanced features without needing a YouTube tutorial for every task.
AI Tools
Filmora has been aggressively adding AI features:
AI Copywriting
Generate video scripts, titles, and descriptions from within the editor. Useful for YouTube metadata and quick ideation, though you'll want to edit the output.
AI Smart Cutout
Remove backgrounds from video clips using AI. Similar to CapCut's background removal but with more control over edge refinement. Works well for clean backgrounds, struggles with complex scenes.
AI Audio Denoise
Removes background noise from audio recordings. We tested it with a laptop microphone recording in a noisy room — it cleaned up wind and ambient noise effectively without making voices sound robotic.
AI Text-Based Editing
Transcribes your video and lets you edit by deleting text — the corresponding video sections are automatically cut. Great for removing "ums" and pauses from talking-head videos.
AI Music Generator
Generate royalty-free background music based on mood, genre, and length. Quality is hit-or-miss, but it's useful when you need background music quickly and don't want to browse libraries.
Note: Many AI features consume "AI credits" which are limited per month. Heavy AI users may need to purchase additional credits.
Effects & Templates
Filmora's asset library is extensive:
- 1,000+ video effects — glitch, VHS, cinematic, light leaks, and more
- 200+ transitions
- Animated titles and text templates
- Royalty-free music and sound effects
- Stickers, overlays, and borders
- Filmstock — premium asset library (included with some plans)
The built-in effects are a major selling point over free editors. Titles look professional, transitions are smooth, and the effects are tasteful (not cheesy). The Filmstock library adds even more, though some assets require a separate subscription.
Performance & Export
Filmora supports GPU acceleration for faster editing and rendering. On our test machine (i7, 16GB RAM, RTX 3060), performance was smooth with 4K footage and multiple effects layers.
Export options:
- Up to 4K at 60fps
- MP4, MOV, AVI, MKV, GIF formats
- Direct upload to YouTube, Vimeo, and TikTok
- Custom bitrate and codec settings
Render times are competitive. A 10-minute 1080p video with effects exported in about 4 minutes on our test machine. Not as fast as DaVinci Resolve's optimized encoder, but faster than Premiere Pro in our testing.
Pricing & Plans
| Plan | Price | Key Details |
|---|---|---|
| Annual | $49.99/year | Full features, ongoing updates |
| Perpetual | $79.99 (one-time) | Current version only, no future major updates |
| Free trial | $0 | All features, watermark on exports |
The perpetual license at $79.99 is the standout. You pay once and own that version forever. You won't get major version upgrades, but for many users, the current feature set is more than enough. The annual plan ($49.99/year) includes all updates and new features.
Compared to Adobe Premiere Pro ($22.99/month), Filmora is significantly cheaper for similar-level results on most content.
