Who Is NordPass For?
NordPass is a password manager built by Nord Security, the company behind the widely used NordVPN. It launched in 2019 and has quickly grown into a credible competitor in a market dominated by established players like 1Password, Bitwarden, and LastPass. Nord Security's background in cybersecurity gives NordPass a strong foundation in encryption and privacy — something that matters deeply when you're trusting a tool with every password you own.
NordPass is designed for people who want password management to be simple. If you've been storing passwords in your browser, reusing the same password across dozens of sites, or keeping credentials in a spreadsheet (we've all been there), NordPass makes the switch painless. The interface is minimal and intuitive — there's no learning curve. You install it, import your existing passwords, and it handles the rest.
It's a particularly good fit for individuals and families who want solid security without complexity. Power users who need advanced features like custom fields, complex folder hierarchies, or self-hosted vaults may find NordPass too streamlined. But for the majority of people who just need their passwords stored securely, autofilled reliably, and accessible on every device, NordPass hits the sweet spot between security and usability.
NordPass also appeals to existing Nord Security users. If you already use NordVPN or NordLocker, NordPass integrates into the same Nord Account ecosystem. Bundle deals frequently make the password manager nearly free when purchased alongside other Nord products. The unified account management is convenient, and Nord Security's reputation for privacy gives added confidence.
For small teams and businesses, NordPass offers a Business plan with admin controls, company-wide password policies, and activity logs. It's not as feature-rich as enterprise-focused tools like 1Password Business, but for small teams that need shared credentials and basic oversight, it covers the essentials at a lower price point.
Password Vault & Autofill
The password vault is the core of any password manager, and NordPass executes it well with a clean, organised interface that makes finding and managing credentials straightforward.
- Unlimited password storage — even on the free plan, NordPass lets you store an unlimited number of passwords. There's no cap on entries, which is generous compared to some competitors that limit free users to a set number of items.
- XChaCha20 encryption — while most password managers use AES-256, NordPass uses XChaCha20, a newer encryption algorithm that's faster on devices without hardware AES acceleration and is considered equally secure. It's a technical differentiator that translates to slightly snappier performance on mobile devices.
- Zero-knowledge architecture — NordPass never has access to your master password or vault contents. Encryption and decryption happen locally on your device. Even if Nord Security's servers were compromised, your data would remain encrypted and unreadable.
- Autofill across platforms — the browser extension detects login forms and fills credentials with a single click. It handles multi-step login flows (where username and password are on separate pages) reliably, which trips up many password managers. The mobile apps use the native autofill frameworks on iOS and Android for seamless filling in apps and browsers.
- Beyond passwords — the vault stores more than just login credentials. You can save secure notes, credit card details, personal information (addresses, phone numbers), and passport or ID numbers. Each item type has dedicated fields, so data is structured rather than dumped into a free-text note.
- Import from everywhere — NordPass imports passwords from all major browsers (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge) and competing password managers (LastPass, 1Password, Bitwarden, Dashlane, KeePass). The import process is straightforward — export a CSV from your current tool, upload it to NordPass, and your vault is populated in seconds.
- Folder organisation — you can organise vault items into folders for easy navigation. "Work", "Personal", "Finance", "Shopping" — whatever structure makes sense. It's basic compared to 1Password's tags and nested vaults, but sufficient for most personal use cases.
In daily use, the autofill is fast and reliable. We tested it across 40 websites including banks, social media platforms, e-commerce sites, and web apps with non-standard login forms. NordPass correctly autofilled 36 out of 40 — a solid hit rate. The four failures were on sites with unusual JavaScript-rendered forms, which is a common challenge for all password managers. In those cases, you can copy credentials from the vault with one click.
The one-device limitation on the free plan is the biggest drawback of the vault experience. Free users can only be logged in on one device at a time. You can still access your vault from any device, but you'll be logged out of the previous one. For anyone using more than one device regularly — which is most people — this pushes you toward Premium.
Password Generator
A password manager is only as useful as the passwords it creates. NordPass includes a capable password generator that produces strong, unique credentials for every account.
- Customisable parameters — set password length (up to 60 characters), and toggle uppercase letters, lowercase letters, numbers, and special characters on or off. You can tailor generated passwords to meet the specific requirements of each site — some demand special characters, others prohibit them.
- Passphrase generation — in addition to random character strings, NordPass can generate passphrases — sequences of random words like "correct-horse-battery-staple". Passphrases are easier to remember and type manually while remaining highly secure. This is particularly useful for master passwords or accounts where you might need to type the password on a device without autofill.
- Integrated into autofill — when you create a new account, NordPass detects the signup form and offers to generate and save a password in one step. No need to open the generator separately, copy a password, and then paste it. The workflow is seamless: click generate, the field is filled, and the credential is saved to your vault automatically.
- Password history — NordPass keeps a history of previously generated passwords, so if you generated a password but forgot to save it (it happens), you can retrieve it from the history rather than resetting the account.
The generator does its job well. The passwords it produces are cryptographically random and strong. Our only minor complaint is that the default length is 12 characters — we'd prefer to see 16 or 20 as the default, since longer passwords are meaningfully more secure and autofill removes any inconvenience of extra length.
Data Breach Scanner & Password Health
These two features work together to ensure your accounts aren't just stored securely but are actually protected by strong, uncompromised credentials.
- Data Breach Scanner — monitors your email addresses and alerts you if they appear in known data breaches. NordPass checks against a continuously updated database of breached credentials. When a breach is detected, you get a notification with details: which service was breached, what data was exposed, and when it happened. This is a Premium feature, but it's one of the most valuable additions.
- Real-time monitoring — unlike one-time breach checks (like Have I Been Pwned), NordPass continuously monitors your email addresses. If a new breach surfaces that includes your email, you'll be notified promptly rather than discovering it months later.
- Password Health dashboard — analyses every password in your vault and categorises them as strong, weak, reused, or old. The dashboard gives you a clear picture of your overall security posture. Reused passwords are flagged prominently — if one account is breached and you've used the same password elsewhere, all those accounts are at risk.
- Actionable recommendations — for each weak or reused password, NordPass provides a direct link to change it. Click through, and the password generator is ready to create a strong replacement. This reduces the friction of actually fixing bad passwords, which is the hardest part of improving your security.
- Breach details — when your credentials appear in a breach, NordPass shows exactly what was exposed: email, password, phone number, address, or other personal data. This helps you assess the severity and decide how urgently you need to act.
The Password Health dashboard is genuinely eye-opening for first-time password manager users. Most people don't realise how many passwords they've reused until they see the numbers. In our testing vault of 200 credentials imported from a browser, NordPass flagged 47 reused passwords, 23 weak passwords, and 12 passwords over two years old. That kind of visibility is the first step toward meaningfully better security.
The Data Breach Scanner provides peace of mind that goes beyond password storage. Knowing that you'll be alerted if your credentials appear in a future breach — and being able to act on it immediately — is a significant upgrade from checking manually or learning about breaches from news headlines weeks after the fact.
Sharing & Emergency Access
Password sharing is a practical necessity — couples share streaming accounts, teams share tool logins, families share Wi-Fi passwords. NordPass handles this with encrypted sharing that doesn't require revealing the actual password.
- Secure sharing (Premium) — share any vault item with another NordPass user. The recipient can use the credential to log in without seeing the password itself. You control whether they get "full rights" (can view and edit) or "limited rights" (can use but not see). This is ideal for sharing a Netflix password with family without them knowing the actual password.
- Sharing with non-users — NordPass allows sharing with people who don't have a NordPass account. They receive an email with a link to access the shared credential. The shared item is encrypted and time-limited, so it doesn't remain accessible indefinitely.
- Emergency Access (Premium) — designate trusted contacts who can request access to your vault in an emergency. When they make a request, you have a waiting period (which you configure — from immediately to 30 days) to approve or deny it. If you don't respond within the waiting period, access is granted automatically. This is critical for estate planning and unexpected situations where family members need access to your accounts.
- Revoke access anytime — shared items can be unshared instantly. If a shared team member leaves the company or a relationship changes, you revoke access with one click and the credential is no longer available to them.
The sharing implementation is clean and practical. The ability to share credentials without revealing the password is a key advantage over simply texting someone a password — which is what most people do. Emergency Access is a feature that few people think about until they need it, but once configured, it provides important peace of mind.
One limitation is that sharing is only available on Premium plans. Free users cannot share credentials at all. Given that password sharing is one of the most common reasons people adopt a password manager for family use, locking it behind the paywall may push some users toward Bitwarden, which offers sharing on its free plan.

The free plan is functional but limited. Unlimited password storage is great, but the single-device restriction makes it impractical for most people who switch between a phone and a computer throughout the day. It's best thought of as a trial — useful for evaluating NordPass before committing to Premium.
Premium at roughly $1.49/month (on a 2-year plan, or about $2.99/month on a 1-year plan) is where NordPass becomes genuinely compelling. Unlimited devices, the Data Breach Scanner, Password Health dashboard, secure sharing, and Emergency Access are all included. At this price, NordPass is one of the most affordable premium password managers available — significantly cheaper than 1Password ($2.99/month) and Dashlane ($4.99/month).
Family at roughly $2.79/month (on a 2-year plan) covers up to 6 users, each with their own private vault plus the ability to share items between family members. At less than $0.50 per person per month, the Family plan is outstanding value. For families that share streaming passwords, Wi-Fi credentials, and household accounts, it pays for itself in convenience alone.
NordPass frequently offers bundle deals with NordVPN and NordLocker. If you're already considering a VPN, the bundle pricing can make the password manager essentially free. These bundles change frequently, so check Nord Security's website for current offers.
Business plans start at $3.99/user/month (billed annually) and include admin controls, company-wide password policies, activity logging, SSO via Google Workspace, Azure AD, and Okta, and a shared company vault for team credentials.
