Who Is Photopea For?
Photopea is a free, browser-based image editor created and maintained by Ivan Kutskir that has grown into one of the most capable Photoshop alternatives online. It runs entirely in the browser with no install, no sign-up, and full read/write support for PSD files.
It's a strong fit for users who need Photoshop-style editing without the Photoshop subscription. The interface, shortcuts, and tool layout are deliberately modelled on Photoshop, so anyone familiar with Adobe's tool can jump straight in.
It suits students and occasional editors who open a PSD now and then and don't want to install a 3GB creative suite for a five-minute task.
It's a good fit for users on locked-down or lightweight machines — school Chromebooks, shared office computers, cheap laptops — where installing desktop Photoshop isn't an option.
It also works well for designers collaborating with Photoshop users who need to open, tweak, and re-save PSDs with layers intact rather than flattening them through a lossy export.
Photopea is less compelling for heavy professional workflows. It lacks some of Photoshop's deeper features — Camera Raw parity, generative AI fill, certain smart object behaviours — and performance depends on browser and RAM.
It's also less suited for offline-first workflows. Although Photopea can run offline once loaded, its natural home is the browser, and users who want a traditional installed app may prefer GIMP or Affinity Photo.
The Browser Editor
Photopea's biggest trick is that it's a full image editor running inside a web page, with no plugin, no WebAssembly install, and no account required.
- Zero install — open photopea.com and start editing. No download, no sign-up, no credit card.
- Photoshop-style UI — menus, panels, tool icons, and keyboard shortcuts mirror Photoshop closely enough that existing users feel at home immediately.
- Local file handling — files are opened and saved directly from your device. Photopea does not upload your images to its servers unless you explicitly share them.
- Cloud storage integration — optional direct open and save to Google Drive, Dropbox, and OneDrive.
- Offline capable — once the page has loaded, the editor continues to work without a network connection.
- Cross-platform — same editor on Windows, macOS, Linux, ChromeOS, and even iPad and Android tablets in their browsers.
- Multi-document tabs — work on several images at once, drag content between tabs, and keep separate histories.
- Scripting API — a JavaScript API close to Photoshop's lets you automate batch operations from the browser console.
- Custom UI scale — adjustable interface scale for high-DPI screens.
- Multi-language support — the interface is translated into dozens of languages.
The "no install" experience is what makes Photopea unusually portable — you can open a PSD on any computer in a classroom, a hotel, or a friend's laptop without asking permission to install anything.
File Formats & PSD Compatibility
Photopea's headline feature is native PSD support, and it handles a wider range of formats than most free editors.
- PSD / PSB — full read and write support including layers, layer styles, masks, smart objects, adjustment layers, and text layers.
- Adobe Illustrator (AI) — open .ai files for viewing and basic editing.
- Adobe InDesign (INDD) — open .indd files read-only for inspection.
- Sketch — open .sketch files from macOS Sketch documents.
- XD and Figma — import files exported from Adobe XD and Figma.
- Raster formats — PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, GIF, BMP, TIFF, ICO, and more.
- Vector formats — SVG, PDF, and EMF import and export.
- RAW camera files — open RAW files from most major camera brands for basic development.
- DDS and PVR — game texture formats used by 3D artists.
- Export options — save as PSD, PNG, JPEG, WebP, AVIF, SVG, PDF, GIF, TIFF, BMP, and more, with per-format quality and size controls.
- Export for web — dedicated dialog for optimised web exports with size preview.
Photopea's PSD fidelity is close enough that most files round-trip cleanly between it and Photoshop, making it a practical free alternative for users who regularly exchange PSDs with collaborators.
Layers, Filters & Tools
Beyond format support, Photopea ships a broad set of editing tools that covers most day-to-day photo and graphic design tasks.
- Full layer system — unlimited layers with opacity, blend modes, masks, clipping masks, groups, and folder nesting.
- Layer styles — drop shadow, inner shadow, glow, bevel, stroke, pattern, and gradient overlay, editable and re-applicable.
- Adjustment layers — levels, curves, hue/saturation, colour balance, vibrance, photo filter, black & white, gradient map, and more, all non-destructive.
- Smart objects — embed other documents as smart objects and edit them in their own tab.
- Selection tools — marquee, lasso, magic wand, quick selection, pen path, and select-subject AI.
- Brush engine — customisable brushes with pressure support on pen displays, texture, scatter, and dynamics.
- Healing and cloning — spot healing brush, clone stamp, and patch-style tools for retouching.
- Filters — blur, sharpen, noise, distort, stylise, render, and more, including smart filters on smart objects.
- AI features — background removal, object selection, and upscaling powered by on-device / cloud ML (free for basic use).
- Text and fonts — full text tool with access to hundreds of web fonts and your local font library on supported browsers.
- Vector shapes and paths — pen tool, shape primitives, Boolean operations, and stroke/fill editing.
- History panel — multiple undo with a visual history list.
- Animations — build GIF and video animations across frames and export.
The depth of features is well beyond what most "free browser editors" offer, which is why Photopea is often recommended as a serious Photoshop substitute rather than a quick touch-up tool.
Photopea Premium
Photopea is free to use with ads in the sidebar. A paid Premium tier removes the ads and supports development.
- Ad-free interface — no sidebar ads, no popups, cleaner workspace.
- More history steps — Premium accounts keep more undo steps than the free tier.
- Priority support — direct support from the developer when issues arise.
- No feature walls — all editing features remain available to free users. Premium is about comfort and supporting the project, not gating tools.
- Subscription options — monthly (~$5/month) or annual (~$40/year), purchased directly from Photopea.
- No tracking — Photopea does not require an account for the free tier and does not upload your files to its servers unless you explicitly share them.
The Premium model is unusual: the free tier gets nearly everything, and users mostly upgrade to remove ads and support one developer rather than to unlock must-have features.
Cost & Project Summary
| Tier | Price | Highlights |
|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Full editor, PSD support, all tools, sidebar ads |
| Premium (monthly) | ~$5/month | Ad-free, more history steps, priority support |
| Premium (annual) | ~$40/year | Same as monthly with a discount for annual billing |
Photopea's pricing is refreshingly uncomplicated: free tier covers everything a normal user needs, and Premium exists mostly to support the project. There is no team tier, no usage cap, no feature-locked "pro" edition.
Compared with alternatives, Photopea undercuts Photoshop's subscription (~$23/month), Affinity Photo's one-time licence, and Pixlr's subscription tier. The trade-off is that it's one developer rather than a large team, so some specialised pro features lag behind commercial editors.
For occasional PSD editing, student work, and lightweight photo retouching, Photopea is genuinely one of the best free tools on the web.
