What Is Sync.com?
Sync.com is a Canadian cloud storage service that prioritizes privacy above everything else. It offers file storage, sync, sharing, and backup — like Dropbox or Google Drive — but with zero-knowledge encryption built into every plan.
Zero-knowledge means Sync.com cannot access, read, or decrypt your files. Your encryption keys are generated on your device and never leave it. Even if Sync.com's servers were breached or a government issued a warrant, they literally cannot hand over your files because they can't read them.
For anyone storing sensitive documents — client files, financial records, medical data, legal documents — this level of privacy is essential, not optional.
Privacy & Encryption
This is Sync.com's core strength and the reason to choose it over Dropbox or Google Drive:
- Zero-knowledge encryption — files are encrypted on your device before upload. Sync.com holds no keys
- End-to-end encryption — data is encrypted in transit and at rest
- AES-256 encryption — military-grade standard
- Canadian jurisdiction — strong privacy laws (PIPEDA), no NSA/GCHQ mass surveillance programs
- No third-party tracking — Sync.com doesn't use Google Analytics or any third-party trackers on their service
- GDPR and HIPAA compliant — suitable for businesses handling EU citizen data or health information
How It Compares on Privacy
| Feature | Sync.com | Dropbox | Google Drive | pCloud |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Zero-knowledge encryption | Included | No | No | Paid add-on |
| End-to-end encryption | Yes | No | No | With add-on |
| Provider can read files | No | Yes | Yes | Default yes |
| HIPAA compliant | Yes | Business only | Business only | No |
The difference is clear. Dropbox and Google Drive can (and do) access your files — for indexing, AI features, and compliance with law enforcement requests. Sync.com structurally cannot.
Sync Speed
Zero-knowledge encryption adds overhead. Sync.com is noticeably slower than Dropbox for syncing large files:
| Test | Sync.com | Dropbox |
|---|---|---|
| 1 GB upload | 5m 45s | 3m 48s |
| 1 GB download | 3m 30s | 2m 30s |
| 1000 small files | 8m 15s | 5m 55s |
Sync.com is about 30-40% slower than Dropbox in our testing. This is the trade-off for zero-knowledge encryption — your device handles all encryption/decryption work. For everyday document syncing, you won't notice. For large media files or huge folder syncs, it's a factor.
Sync.com does lack block-level sync (where only changed parts of a file are uploaded). This means editing a large file re-uploads the entire file, not just the changes. Dropbox handles this better.
Features
- Selective sync — choose which folders sync to your device
- File versioning — restore previous versions up to 365 days (on paid plans)
- Deleted file recovery — recover deleted files within your version history window
- Secure sharing — share files and folders with password protection, expiration dates, and download limits
- Vault — a separate encrypted storage area for sensitive files that don't need to sync locally
- Remote wipe — erase Sync data from a lost or stolen device
- Two-factor authentication — TOTP-based 2FA for account security
Sync Vault
The Vault feature is unique and practical. It's cloud-only storage (files don't sync to your devices) with the same zero-knowledge encryption. Use it for long-term archival storage — tax records, old project files, backups — that you don't need on your laptop but want securely stored.
Apps & Usability
Desktop apps are available for Windows and macOS. They integrate with your file system like Dropbox — a Sync folder appears in your file explorer, and files inside automatically sync.
The interface is functional but not flashy. It does what it needs to do without extra polish. The web interface is clean and handles file management well, including previewing documents and images.
Mobile apps (iOS and Android) handle photo backup, file browsing, and sharing. They're reliable but not as polished as Dropbox's mobile experience.
Notable gap: No Linux desktop app. Linux users need to use the web interface or find third-party solutions. This is a significant limitation for privacy-focused users who tend to use Linux.
Pricing & Plans
| Plan | Storage | Price (annual) |
|---|---|---|
| Free | 5 GB | $0 |
| Mini | 2 TB | $8/month |
| Personal Pro | 6 TB | $20/month |
| Teams Standard | 1 TB/user | $6/user/month |
| Teams+ Unlimited | Unlimited | $15/user/month |
The 2 TB plan at $8/month is competitive — cheaper than Dropbox Plus ($11.99/month for 2 TB) and includes zero-knowledge encryption that Dropbox doesn't offer at any price.
The free plan gives you 5 GB, which is enough to test the service but not for serious storage.
