Who Is Thinkific For?
Thinkific is a Canadian-founded online course platform launched in 2012 that has grown into one of Teachable's biggest direct competitors. The two platforms serve similar customers — creators, experts, and educators monetising knowledge — but Thinkific has leaned harder into the "scaling creator" use case with better community features, a dedicated mobile app, and no transaction fees even on its entry-level paid plans.
The ideal user is a creator who has validated their first course and now wants to build a sustainable course business. Features like Thinkific Communities, the branded student mobile app, and TCommerce (the built-in checkout) are all designed for creators who are past the "will this work?" stage and into the "how do I grow?" stage.
Thinkific is also a strong fit for teams and organisations building internal training programs, partner certification, or employee onboarding. Thinkific Plus, the enterprise tier, supports SSO, multi-site hosting, advanced permissions, and dedicated account management for B2B and enterprise use cases.
It's less well-suited for creators who primarily need a landing page and checkout with minimal course complexity — for that use case, Podia or even Gumroad may be simpler and cheaper. It's also not the best for creators who want the broadest funnel and email tools built in; Kajabi goes further there.
Where Thinkific wins clearly is in no-transaction-fee pricing. Even the entry paid plan has zero platform transaction fees (only the unavoidable Stripe/PayPal processing fees), while Teachable charges 5% on Basic. Over a year of selling, this difference can add up to thousands of dollars.
Course Builder & Content Types
Thinkific's course builder feels modern and polished. The structure is section-based, similar to Teachable, but the interface is cleaner and the content types are broader.
- Drag-and-drop course builder — organise chapters and lessons with a visual tree, reorder content with drag-and-drop, and preview student experience with a single click.
- Video hosting — native video hosting with Wistia-powered delivery, adaptive bitrate streaming, and automatic captioning on higher plans. No external video platform needed.
- Rich content types — videos, text, PDF downloads, quizzes, surveys, assignments, audio files, embedded HTML, and Markdown-based text lessons. Broader native content support than Teachable.
- Assignments with instructor review — students can submit text, file, or video assignments for instructor review with feedback and approval workflows. Important for programs with hands-on work.
- Quiz and exam tools — multi-question quizzes with multiple-choice, true/false, written answer, and image-based questions. Graded quizzes can gate progression; exams can be randomised and timed.
- Drip content scheduling — release content on a schedule relative to enrolment date for cohort-style or paced learning. Flexible per-lesson scheduling.
- Prerequisites and progression gating — require students to complete earlier lessons or courses before unlocking new content, enforcing structured learning paths.
- Certificates of completion — customisable PDF certificates issued automatically on course completion, with your branding and signature.
In daily use, the course builder is one of the most polished in the category. The admin UI loads quickly, saves reliably, and presents a clean structure for complex multi-module courses. LearnWorlds has a richer content library; Thinkific's is broader than Teachable's but narrower than LearnWorlds' interactive content options.
The assignment and grading workflows are a standout feature for creators running programs with human feedback loops — coaching-style courses, accelerators, or certification programs. Teachable and Podia don't match this capability.
Thinkific Communities & Mobile App
Thinkific Communities and the Thinkific branded mobile app are the platform's biggest differentiators vs Teachable. Together they make Thinkific feel closer to Kajabi's all-in-one experience without the Kajabi price tag.
- Communities feature — built-in community spaces where students can post, comment, and engage with each other and the instructor. Integrated into the course experience so students don't need a separate tool.
- Community categories and channels — organise discussions by topic or course, keep conversations focused, and pin important posts. Similar structure to Circle or Discord channels.
- Rich post formatting — community posts support text, images, video, and embedded content. Reply threading keeps conversations organised.
- Community notifications — students get email and in-app notifications for replies, mentions, and new posts in subscribed channels.
- Branded mobile app (add-on on select plans) — dedicated iOS and Android app with your branding, logo, and colour scheme. Students download your app from the App Store and Play Store.
- Offline video download — in the mobile app, students can download videos for offline viewing on commutes, planes, or anywhere without reliable internet.
- Push notifications — send push notifications through the mobile app for new content, community activity, or course updates. Drives higher engagement than email alone.
- Cross-device progress sync — students' progress syncs across web and mobile, so they can watch a lesson on the commute and pick up where they left off at home.
The built-in community is a genuine advantage over Teachable. Creators no longer need to pair their course platform with Circle, Discord, or Facebook Groups to provide peer discussion. For course types where community is core to the product (cohort programs, mastermind-style courses), having it integrated into the same experience as the lessons is meaningfully better.
The branded mobile app is a premium feature (available on higher plans or as an add-on) but for creators with engaged audiences, it can significantly boost completion rates. Learners who download your app are statistically much more likely to finish a course than web-only users.
Sales, Checkout & Marketing
Thinkific's sales and checkout tools (TCommerce) handle the full purchase-to-enrolment workflow with a polished, customisable experience.
- Sales page templates — pre-built sales page templates with customisable sections for hero, curriculum, instructor, testimonials, and CTAs. Cleaner defaults than Teachable's older templates.
- Custom domain — connect your own domain so courses live under your brand, not a Thinkific subdomain. Included on paid plans.
- TCommerce checkout — Thinkific's built-in checkout with Stripe and PayPal support, optimised mobile checkout flow, and support for multiple currencies.
- Payment plans and subscriptions — flexible pricing including one-time payments, payment plans (e.g., 3x monthly), and recurring subscriptions for membership-style offers.
- Coupons and discounts — percentage or fixed-amount discount codes with usage limits, expiration dates, and per-course or global scope.
- Order bumps and upsells — offer additional products at checkout for cross-selling and increased AOV. Multi-step post-purchase offers also supported.
- Affiliate program — built-in affiliate marketing with per-affiliate tracking, custom commission rates, and automated payouts.
- Thinkific site builder — build your full marketing website (home, about, blog, course catalogue) on Thinkific itself with a drag-and-drop builder, or connect an external site.
The built-in site builder is useful for creators who don't have a WordPress or Webflow site yet. It's not as flexible as dedicated tools but covers the essentials for a professional creator brand. For established creators with existing sites, connecting via custom domain is the better path.
The main limitation is marketing automation. Thinkific has basic email notifications but doesn't include a full email marketing suite or funnel builder. Creators serious about marketing automation typically pair Thinkific with ConvertKit, MailerLite, or ActiveCampaign.
Thinkific Plus & Integrations
Thinkific Plus is the enterprise tier aimed at teams, businesses, and organisations running training at scale — partner certification, employee onboarding, customer education, and B2B programs.
- Multiple sites — host several Thinkific sites under one account with shared admin, useful for separating different brands, languages, or audiences.
- SSO integration — Single sign-on integration with SAML, Okta, Azure AD, and other enterprise identity providers for managed workforce learning.
- API access and webhooks — deeper API access for custom integrations, automated enrolment, and data extraction to external BI tools.
- Advanced user roles — custom admin roles with granular permissions for different team functions (course creators, marketers, support, finance).
- Dedicated account manager — account manager and priority support for enterprise deployments, including onboarding and implementation assistance.
- Bulk enrolment — enrol many students at once via CSV upload, API, or SSO provisioning — essential for B2B and enterprise use cases.
- SCORM and xAPI — limited SCORM/xAPI support for integration with corporate LMS systems. Not as full-featured as dedicated LMS platforms but sufficient for basic compliance needs.
- Advanced reporting and analytics — enterprise-grade reporting on engagement, completion, certification, and business metrics with exports to BI tools.
For creators and small businesses, the standard plans are sufficient. Thinkific Plus becomes relevant only when you're running training for hundreds or thousands of learners at once, or when you need enterprise compliance features.
Integrations are good but not as deep as Kajabi's ecosystem. The 90+ integrations cover the essentials (Mailchimp, ConvertKit, Zapier, Google Analytics, Shopify) but Thinkific doesn't try to be an all-in-one marketing platform — it focuses on being the best course platform and integrating with specialist tools for the rest.

The free plan allows one course with zero transaction fees, which is unusually generous and makes it a genuine low-risk way to test Thinkific before committing.
Basic at $49/month unlocks unlimited courses, custom domains, coupons, and assignments — all with zero transaction fees. This is the best-value tier for creators with validated offers: compared to Teachable Basic ($59/month + 5% transaction fees), Thinkific Basic usually saves hundreds of dollars per month for active sellers.
Start at $99/month adds bulk email to students, 5 communities, and memberships with recurring payments. The right tier for creators running a growing catalogue and engaging students regularly.
Grow at $199/month adds advanced course reports, unlimited communities, 5 admin accounts, and the branded mobile app add-on option. Suited to creators running a real course business with multiple offers and team members.
Thinkific Plus is custom-priced for enterprise needs and typically starts around $500/month base with per-site and per-enrolment pricing on top.
The no-transaction-fee policy across all plans is the single biggest pricing advantage vs Teachable. For creators doing any meaningful volume, this savings typically outweighs any minor feature differences.
